Some RV road trips may require driving at night. While it’s not ideal, you can take the following precautions to increase the chances of a safe trip.

Look Out for Animals
One of the dangers of driving at night is that it’s harder to see animals on or near the road. This is especially true in rural areas where there are fewer street lights. Some animals, such as deer and racoons, can be especially active at night.
To avoid hitting an animal, keep your eyes peeled for any movement on or near the road. If you see an animal, slow down and be prepared to stop. Resist the urge to swerve, which could end up causing more damage to your motorhome or your towable camper and tow vehicle.
Keep Your Windshield Clean
It’s important to have a clear view of the road when driving at night. Make sure your windshield is clean inside and out before setting off on your RV trip. At night, even a small smudge on your windshield can make it difficult to see.
You’ll also want to keep the windshield free of condensation. Depending on the temperature, you’ll want to run either the heating or cooling system.
Drive Slowly
Driving slowly will give you more time to react if something suddenly appears in your path. This can help you avoid collisions and reduce the chances of injury.
It’s also a good idea to give yourself extra time to reach your destination so that you don’t feel rushed and tempted to drive faster than you should.
Take Breaks or Rotate Drivers
Driving while drowsy is incredibly dangerous. Be sure you take plenty of breaks so that you can be rested enough to maintain the focus needed for a safe drive.
If you can, consider rotating drivers. This will ensure that drivers get the rest they need but without needing to take as many breaks.
Be Prepared for Inclement Weather
Bad weather can make night driving even more dangerous. Before setting out, check the weather forecast for your route. If there is a chance of rain, snow, or ice, consider postponing your RV trip or taking a different route.
Modify Your RV’s Lighting
It’s important that your RV is easily seen by other motorists on the road. Consider adding LED bar lights on the sides of your camper, which can make your RV more visible at night. Just be sure that the RV lights aren’t too bright in a way that would be distracting to other drivers.
